European Gas Advocacy Forum: a voice for gas

The challenge

Europe’s policy-makers face a challenge: to build competitiveness and support energy security while improving progress towards climate targets. Meeting this challenge depends on a deeper understanding of the energy supply options available.

Natural gas, which is affordable, abundant and relatively clean, is one such option. Yet, in some of the emission mitigation pathways currently being promoted, natural gas is being phased out of the energy mix.

Switching to natural gas for power generation could in particular deliver substantial cuts in Europe’s carbon footprint and be the most economically attractive pathway.

Natural gas would also help support the medium- to long-term deployment of renewables in power generation. Natural gas and renewable energy make a great match: gas-powered plants can provide flexible, economical base-load generation to balance intermittent renewable energy.

The project’s aims and its partners

The European Gas Advocacy Forum (EGAF), an informal group of experienced players in the European gas industry, was established in 2010 to increase understanding of the environmental, economic and energy security benefits of natural gas.

The forum is made up of Centrica, eni, E.ON Ruhrgas, Gazprom Export, GDF SUEZ, Qatar Petroleum, Shell and Statoil.

Where we are now

EGAF has released the paper “The Future Role of Natural Gas”, a key output of this effort. Xyntéo served as an independent third-party advisor and facilitator in this process.
