Building communities within a community
In the last of three episodes that look at how our changing world and climate effects individuals and communities in the margins of our society, we are taken to the city of Milwaukee, USA, by community change agent Joanne Sabir.
Having known many places in her life, Joanne has called Milwaukee home for 20 years. Growing up, Joanne lived in various cities as job opportunities opened for her father, and experienced diverse communities. But Milwaukee proved different. Often the only person of colour in a room, Joanne was now living in one of the worst cities for African-Americans in the USA – the consequence of decisions in urban planning that limited access to work, healthcare, and community facilities. But Joanne is determined to create change with a community space.
